The origin of the city of Fier goes to the VI century p.e.s. With the ancient city of Apollonia (named after the Greek god, Apollos). Apollonia was the second largest Illyrian city and one of the two starting points of Egnatia Street, one of the main roads of the Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire. The Egnatia road connects Rome to the West with Constantinople in the East.
The origin of Fier's name is controversial, however, most researchers believe Fier comes from the Italian word "fiera", meaning the fair. According to the supporters of this thesis, Venetian merchants named the city in the 14th and 15th centuries when buying agricultural products in the city's markets.
The city was founded in 1864 when Kahreman Pasha (the local governor) asked some French architects to design the future town as a shopping mall and artisan at the important intersection Lushnjë-Fier and Berat-Mallakastër-Seman.
The city was designed according to the 19th Century European Renaissance Cities Model. Its main activity would be the trade of agricultural products in the areas of Myzeqe and Mallakster. During the years 1864-1865, a market was built along the river Gjanica for 122 merchants. The first inhabitants of Fier were the servants of Kahreman Pasha and the Vllehe family members who had lived in the area since the 1800s. Shortly after the construction of the market, Fier created his economic status as a town of traders and craftsmen .
