The municipality of Gjilan is located in the southeastern part of Kosovo, the region of Anamorava. It is one of the largest municipalities in the country. Its geographic position enables it to have good connections with other centers of Kosovo and the region. Around the town of Gjilan lies the Hill of Martyrs (Popovica), Gllama, Dheu i Bardhe, the area of Malisheva, Zabeli of Sahit Agas and the Bregu i Thate. There are three small rivers, Mirusha, Banja and Stanishori, which join and flow to Morava, west of the village of Uglar. Gjilan is far from Pristina, the capital of Kosovo, 46 kilometers from Kamenica - 27 km, from Vitia - 22 km, from Artana - about 25 kilometers. The municipalities of the region are bordered in the southeast with Presevo (33 km) and Kumanovo (53), while in the east - with Bujanovac (40 km). The construction of the Gjilan / Gnjilane-Lipjan road, from the direction of Kishna Polas, has considerably reduced the distances of this municipality with the Pristina airport, the national road as well as the Kosovo Railways, in Ferizaj and Lipjan. Gjilan will soon be connected with Kumanovo, from Stançiq's direction, where the opening of a customs point is foreseen.
Gjilan has good conditions for agriculture and is known as an agro-industrial city. It has a continental medium climate, with hot summers and cold winters. January's average temperature is -0.9 degrees Celsius, while the average July temperature - 21.5 degrees. In the fall, rain falls here, averaging 177 mm, while in the summer - 129 mm. The amount of rainfall in the spring is 145 mm and in winter - 130 mm.
The Gjilan / Gnjilane area is defined by the Morava e Binçës River, which collects all the small rivers, with an average monthly flow rate of 6.7 cubic meters / second. Southeast is surrounded by the Karadak Mountains.
Coordinates of the extension of the city of Gjilan are 42 degrees north and 21.20 degrees east and at an altitude of 501 and 590 m, while the region 475 m in Budrika up to 1000 m above sea level in the border zone with Macedonia (Stanqiq). Gjilan / Gnjilane is rich in ore (iron and leucid) and mineral resources (Nasal, Pidic, Kmetoc, Uglare, Përlepnicë). In seismic maps, Gjilan is known as a region of high risk. In 2002, it was hit by an earthquake, which left a dead, tens of injured and over 8,000 damaged public and private facilities.
