Lipljan is known since Illyrian times as part of Ulpiana town which is located at a distance of 10km. Lipjan in the Roman period was largely a small settlement on the way to Lissum. The identification of Lipljan by the name of Ulpiana was later confirmed by the discoveries of the ruins of ancient antiquity and the Byzantine period.   From ancient times the name Lypenion, Lypiana obviously come to the present name Lipjan. Under the foundations of the old church in this part are found the foundations of the Byzantine Basilica, while from Lipljani itself are known some epigraphs-monuments, from which confirm the data for the existence of Ulpiana. With the development of the mining industry in the settlement of Janjevo, Pristina became known, so Lipjan lost its former importance and functioned as a simple local "square". Janjeva was once mentioned in 1303, with the development of the mining industry in the nineteenth century. XIV and XV, was erected in an important center near Pristina and Novobërdë (Artana). Among other things, the city had contacts with today's Ragusa (Dubrovnik) Republic of Croatia. One of the first schools in Kosovo was opened in Janjevo in 1665 and is still used today.
Generally until the construction of the railway at the end of the century. Past (1873-1874) Lipjan was a common village known as the crossroads of the streets in the region. In this railway Lipjan won the railway station, along which were constructed the first commercial workshops, grain storage stores and handicraft stores, so until the end of the century. During the course of Turkish rule, this new part of Lipljan gained the appearance of the town's crater, while the town was proclaimed in 1920. With the operation of the Kosovo Railways Macedonia, turnover was mainly through Greece (Thessaloniki-Thessaloniki city), thus the market competition and commercial activities affected the centers such as Mitrovica, Ferizaj and Lipjan in the weakening of the market in the larger centers such as Prishtina, Gjakova and Prizren. Since then, Lipjan has begun to develop. It follows that Lipjan's influence extends more in the immediate vicinity than in western mountainous and hilly parts, not only in the parts that include administrative boundaries, but also in parts of Upper Drenica, with which Lipjan is roughly the only Township township.   On the other hand, as an example of the gravitation of South Drenica, beside Lipljan, free natural movement is created. From this it turns out that Lipjan - geographical position presents a broad aspect and interest in relation to larger centers.
